Assemblywoman Melissa Miller is proud to announce the success of her inaugural Summer Food Drive to End Hunger at the King Kullen in Island Park on September 16. Partnered with Long Island Cares, 1,229 pounds of non-perishable food items and supplies were collected and will be delivered to over 600 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and veterans’ service programs throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“I am so proud of my fellow Long Islanders for lending a hand to help feed hungry New Yorkers across Long Island,” said Miller. “It is important to help those in need as much as we can, whenever we can, not only during times of crisis. I am thrilled that so many people came out to help us reach such a fantastic amount of food and supplies to donate to Long Island Cares. I hope that next year we can collect even more to help Long Island Cares extend their reach and feed every hungry person on Long Island.”

“During a time when food-drive donations are historically low, the Summer Food Drive to End Hunger serves as a significant tool in meeting our vision of a hunger-free Long Island. This series of food drives helps us to put more food on the tables of our friends and neighbors facing food insecurity. The food drive sponsored by Assemblywoman Melissa Miller on Saturday, Sept. 16, resulted in an unprecedented 1,229 pounds of food for the needy. We are very grateful to Assemblywoman Miller for her participation and recognizing the truth of hunger on Long Island, and for her decision to stand and act on behalf of those in need,” said William Gonyou, community events and food-drive manager of Long Island Cares.
