Senator Todd Kaminsky, the office of New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, and the Marion & Aaron Gural Five Towns Jewish Community Center (JCC) hosted an anti-scam seminar, an informational forum focused on educating and protecting citizens from scams.
“All too often, we hear of our family members—especially seniors—or worrying friends and neighbors being targeted by vicious scams that threaten their livelihood, safety, and security,” said Senator Todd Kaminsky. “If we have saved one individual from being deceived by these frauds or from losing their life’s savings, then we have accomplished our goal.”
“My office is committed to providing all New Yorkers with the resources to protect themselves from abuse and scams,” said Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. “Fraudsters are always looking for ways to line their pockets at the expense of unsuspecting consumers—and we will continue to hold accountable those who take advantage of New Yorkers.”
Attendees learned about various types of scams, including the sweepstakes scam and home-improvement swindles. Senator Kaminsky recalled how his grandmother was once targeted by a “Grandma, it’s me” scam. Presenters also educated the group on internet safety, elder abuse, and how to take control of their finances.
“The Marion & Aaron Gural JCC is pleased to be working with New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky to protect our community from scammers who prey on vulnerable residents,” said Joel Block, executive director, Marion & Aaron Gural Five Towns JCC.
Many citizens attended the event, which was held at the JCC in Lawrence. Anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a scam can call the State Attorney General’s hotline at 1-800-771-7755. For more information on this event, please contact Senator Kaminsky’s district office at 516-766-8383.
