The rav is probably one of the most familiar faces here in the Five Towns and in other communities in New York, on the West Coast, and in South Florida. He is Rav Shmuel Avigdor Feivelson, the founder and rosh yeshiva of Kollel Nachlas Naftoli in Tsfat, Israel.

Rav Feivelson’s father was the son-in-law of Rav Naftoli Trop in Radin, and Rav Yitzchok Hutner was a talmid of Rav Feivelson’s father, Rav Baruch Yosef. Rav Feivelson was born in Radin and as a child was forced to flee to Siberia during the war. By the time he was 11 years old, he had lost both parents.

Rav Feivelson has almost adopted the Five Towns—or perhaps it is the other way around, that is, our community has adopted him and his kollel. The rav, at the age of 86, has attempted recently to limit his trips to the U.S. for health reasons and to spend more time with his talmidim. At this juncture, however, when he is not here, the financial matzav of the kollel becomes distressed. So to that end he is here and will be speaking at a parlor meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Gross, 125 Lawrence Avenue, on Sunday morning, November 5, at 9:30 a.m. The rav will be in New York until Wednesday, November 8.

Rav Shmuel Lichtenstein of Kollel Avreichim in Far Rockaway visited Rav Feivelson’s kollel in Tsfat last year and personally observed the kollel filled to capacity with young men studying Torah at the highest levels.
